The Oval Office is filled with people and equipment. Aides stand against the walls. Vice President Kamela Harris and First Lady Jill Biden stand across the room. Spotlights are set up to illuminate the President, who sits behind the Resolute Desk. It’s difficult to read his face. His scowl is uncharacteristic. His eyes are tired but determined. As the last bits of makeup are applied, he pulls himself together to project quiet confidence to the three television cameras focused on him and the audience tuned in for this address. Everyone freezes in place as the countdown begins for the broadcast. Three teleprompters begin running in sync—a countdown. The lights shine on the President as the stage manager counts down the final few beats with the fingers of his right hand. On zero, his finger points directly at the President, who begins his address to the nation:
